Dr. Michael Baker, Rear Admiral US Navy (Ret)

"The War in Iran: Why Are We There and Who Really Benefits?"

Mar 19, 2026 12:00 PM

The United States started a war by bombing Iran and assassinating its leadership. Is this war necessary? What is the cost in human life, financial assets, war material, and our deterrence of threats elsewhere in the world while we attack Iran?

Dr. Baker will explore what he says are the real reasons for starting this war, who wins, who loses, and who profits the most; he will "follow the money" with film clips and analysis to explain why we are really in Iran and who benefits.

About Dr. Baker:

He is a retired surgeon who'd served 30 years in uniform and retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Rear Admiral having earned numerous awards, including a Combat Action Ribbon and 3 Legion of Merit Awards.
He has been a staff planner for Naval Forces Central Command (CENTCOM) covering the Mideast, was deployed with the U.S. Marine Corps to combat duty in Desert Storm, and has had numerous assignments in CENTCOM, including Bahrain, Kuwait, and Egypt.

Dr. Baker currently teaches history, political science, and military affairs for the Osher Lifelong Learning (OLLI) Programs at UC Berkeley, Dominican University, Cal State University, and CSU Channel Islands.

Tricia Smith - The Sausalito Village

Service to All Our Older Citizens

Apr 02, 2026 12:00 PM

The Tricia Smith, one of the original founders and the longtime President of the Age-Friendly Sausalito Village, will be presenting what's been happening, since she'd initially attended one of our meetings back in 2015, when this very needed service was established.

So coming up on 11 years since it's CARSS program was founded, Call A Ride for Sausalito Seniors, an all volunteer, local nonprofit organization and which serves all of our elders in town, a lot has been achieved.

In the past and for years, our club partook in their annual Chore Day by helping older citizens around their residences, i.e., by replacing smoke detector batteries, installing smoke and Co2 detectors, flipping their mattresses, moving boxes by getting up on ladders and/or light gardening, whatever they're unable to accomplish by themselves anymore.

Hence, for one to Age-in-Place is what this organization is all about.

The History of Marin County

Apr 16, 2026 12:00 PM

"The history of Marin County is intimately connected with the birth and early growth of the state of California. Marin is home to one of the last Spanish missions and the location of the lone battle of the Bear Flag Revolt, which led to California statehood. At that time, Marin was a pastoral paradise that supplied most of the raw materials for the exploding population of Gold Rush Era San Francisco. Fifty years later, its temperate climate and the devastation wrought by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire brought on a veritable “land rush” to the region."

Krystal's book titled Gone With the Tide pertains to the waterfront history starting back in the 1950s. Each chapter represents a decade through art, photography, and stories, plus tributes to noteworthy figures in the order of their arrival at Gate 6.

Then, inspired by her research, she has opened a shop called Waterfront Wonders at 314 Caledonia Street, next door to Waterstreet Hardware, that features an eclectic mix of jewelry, fashions, and vintage artworks and offers a step back in time during Sausalito's bayfront history.

"An Assassin in Utopia: ...

May 07, 2026

...The True Story of a 19th-Century Sex Cult and a President's Murder."

A bit of background regarding her recent novel, is that in 1848, until 1881, there was a small utopian colony in upstate New York referred to and known as the Oneida Community, where there it was discovered about its shocking experiments with sexual practices, such as open marriages and free love, to the sexual training of young boys by older women.

Then in 1881, a one-time member of the Oneida Community, Charles Guiteau, assassinated President James Garfield in a brutal crime that shook America to its core.

Hosting a Living "Death Café"

Jun 11, 2026 12:00 PM

Jim will share some of the many stories he has heard from his personal experiences hosting Death Cafés and from volunteering with Final Exit Network.

He hopes attendees will be inspired to become more comfortable discussing this stigmatized topic, as he'd spent much of his life not realizing that he was death ignorant, likely in death denial, and desperately in need of death education.

He has learned that the more conversations and the more planning, the greater solace one can achieve, the deeper appreciation of life’s preciousness, as well as leaving a generous gift to our grateful, grieving loved ones.

Message of Hope Via the Lens of Persian Culture, His Experiences & Observations

Jul 09, 2026 12:00 PM
Kam Shadan, an active member of the Rotary Club of San Rafael since 2006, has a business background pertaining to being a "forensic expert in program/project and construction management standards of care, and has over 40 years of experience overseeing major infrastructure, transportation and real estate development projects nationwide and before becoming a United States citizen in 1982", a lot occurred prior that.

"Kam was born in Tehran in a secular family, and his father's line of work in Iran was running his own engineering consulting company."

Kam wanted to follow in his footsteps, had even attended UC Berkeley in 1972, worked for General Electric's Nuclear Engineering Division, as he was studying for his Masters Degree, but then the Islamic Revolution happened in 1979 and changed everything in Iran, along with his dreams of going back halted with it.

Currently he "has found himself trying to make sense and reconcile the actions of the government in the country he was born in with the actions of the country he has adopted."

And "after the recent elevation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf, he decided to share his message of hope through the lens of Persian culture, his experiences, and observations."
